5 Indian Rug Brands Weaving Craft, Heritage, & Storytelling Into Our Lives

Handcrafted from natural materials, designed with care, these homegrown carpets are made to transform interiors into spaces of elegance and storytelling.

My house is filled with carpets, each one a chapter of my life. From cosplaying as Princess Jasmine when I was four, to nervously carrying my first glass of wine only to drop it, every carpet has a memory. These pieces are not just decorative accents but storytellers, holding within them the journeys of the artisans who crafted them and the places they came from.

India’s history of carpet weaving stretches back centuries, deeply entwined with culture, and community. Our spaces deserve pieces that aren’t picked off the shelf in a hurry but are instead born out of patience, skill, and care. They deserve rugs and carpets that age with us, gather our stories, and weave them into their own.

Here are five homegrown brands pouring their hearts and artistry into every creation.

1. Majja

Founded in 2024, Majja champions the women of the Labbai and Rowther communities in Pathamadai village, Tamil Nadu. Once a craft dominated by men, mat weaving is now largely practiced by women. Their current collection, 'Break the Pattern', is founder Mohana’s way of challenging traditional ideas of what a woven mat should look like. Made from korai grass in shades of black and beige, these mats feature unconventional designs that are sure to brighten up any home. Thanks to the natural properties of the grass, the mats also stay cool during the summer months.
