Renowned photographer Saunak Shah embarks on an evocative year-long photo series titled "Wholeness: A Magical Journey," unraveling the complexities of identity and self-discovery. Through 12 distinct parts, each dedicated to a dominant colour corresponding to Shah's monthly sentiment, the project explores the fusion of two cultures, inviting viewers into a dialogue about the quest for unity within the fragments of one's self.
As a bicultural artist growing up between India and the United States, Shah grapples with the profound question of "Who Am I?" in a world often shaped by external influences. 'Wholeness' serves as a poignant reflection on this struggle, providing a canvas for Shah's exploration of his own identity while resonating with those navigating the intersection of cultures and social expectations.
The project not only delves into the artist's personal journey but also intertwines with his experiences with plant-medicine since August 2022. Through mediums such as journaling, creative writing, meditation, storytelling, collaboration, and community engagement, Shah captures the depth of his insights, creating a multi-dimensional narrative that transcends the visual realm.
Each month unfolds as a unique chapter, unveiling a spectrum of colors and sentiments. In January, the theme of 'Healing' is embodied by the color white, representing ceremony and serving as a foundational hue for the subsequent months. February's 'Inner Growth' adopts a grey palette, mirroring nature's hibernation and encouraging introspection. March witnesses the emergence of 'Outer Growth' with the color yellow, aligning with the vibrancy of Holi and the Spring Equinox, symbolizing renewal and creativity.
April's exploration of 'Nature' embraces the color brown, linking the concept to the eternal connection between our bodies and the earth. May turns to 'Memory' with the colour green, a tribute to the artist's father and a celebration of Mother's Day. June, commemorating Pride Month, dives into the theme of Desire through the colour purple, weaving folklore and mythology into a modern narrative.
July ignites the element of 'Fire' with an orange palette, drawing inspiration from ancient rituals and the symbolism of light and shadows. August's 'Water' theme in blue signifies a refreshing rebirth, drawing parallels to classical and modern references. September's exploration of 'Dreams' unfolds in shades of pink, channeling cosmic queer masculinity and evoking a dreamlike aura inspired by various facets of life.
Saunak's goal with 'Wholeness' is to challenge preconceived notions surrounding unity, sparking conversations and creating a space for individuals to navigate their own fragments. The project serves as a powerful lens into the impact of identity, queerness, and social conditioning, especially within minority and underrepresented diasporas. By navigating the layers of identity, Shah hopes to unveil a shared understanding that we are all part of a much larger, collective identity. 'Wholeness' becomes not just a visual feast but a profound narrative, inviting audiences to reflect on their own journeys of self-discovery and unity.
