Stale Rumours is a Mumbai collective of queer artists who come together to blend art and craft, challenge societal norms, and evoke joy through their creations. Comprising artists and makers with diverse creative backgrounds, they initiate conversations, fuse art with craft, and aim to provoke both laughter and thoughtful contemplation.
Their platform consists of a dynamic blend of zines, prints, stickers, handmade trinkets, and much more. At the centre of Stale Rumours lies a profound desire to disrupt the status quo, to challenge perceptions, and to celebrate the beauty of diversity. The collective comprises individuals from varied creative backgrounds, each bringing a unique perspective and skill set to the table. Their collective aim is simple yet profound: to create art that both entertains and provokes contemplation.
Their zines speak to their ethos, exploring a myriad of themes ranging from mental health awareness to the art of mending clothes. These zines, accompanied by playful paper merchandise and quirky games, serve as conduits for conversation, initiating dialogues, and encouraging individuals to reflect on societal constructs and personal experiences.
The collective's journey has been marked by significant milestones, showcasing their work at esteemed events such as the Alt Art festival. Recounting their participation, they expressed gratitude towards attendees, exhibitors, and performers, acknowledging the festival's tender and joyous atmosphere. Special commendation was reserved for the Alt+Art team, lauded for their thoughtful and hospitable event curation.
Their engagement extended to fostering creativity through interactive experiences, as seen during their involvement in the 'Run As Slow As You Can' exhibition at the Art House. Hosting the Bits and Pieces Collage Activity Corner, they witnessed multigenerational participation, witnessing families come together to create ingenious artworks and badges. It was an enriching experience that left a shimmering trail of joy and inspiration.
The collective's commitment to advocacy and representation transcends geographical boundaries. Members like Shruti Bhiwandiwala represented Stale Rumours in Mumbai at The Gay Gaze Bombay during Desi Pride Weekender, while others, like Adrita and Koshy Brahmatmaj, took their presence to Delhi for Gaysi and Tinder’s queermadeweeked. Their dedication to platforms promoting queer art and expression is evident, building on their previous year's success.
Stale Rumours continues to resonate beyond the mere creation of tangible pieces. It speaks to the power of creativity in dismantling stereotypes, fostering inclusivity, and spreading joy. With each collaboration, exhibition, and participation, they cement their position as catalysts for change, creating ripples of inspiration within the artistic community and beyond.
