Beyond Open Mics & DJ Sets, Cafés Across India Are Building Music-Centric Communities

Besides featuring listening sessions, album launches, and curated vinyl sets by selectors, these places have also become the perfect platform for indie musicians.
Summary

The article looks at the rise of coffee raves, tracing their origins in cities like New York City and London with collectives like Daybreaker, before focusing on how the format is finding ground in India. It explores how cafés such as August Khar, Blockheads, Every Morning Cartel, and Nifraam are evolving into cultural spaces that host music, pop-ups, and community events, framing the movement as part of a broader shift towards alcohol-free, daytime social experiences centred around music and connection.

Coffee raves started as early morning, alcohol-free parties in cities like London and New York, with collectives like Daybreaker hosting DJ sets inside cafés and small spaces — one of the first was held in a coffee shop basement in New York in 2013, and similar underground-style gatherings were already happening in European café spaces like Amsterdam and London. The growing movement became a reflection of our shift towards a more intentional, slow living and going out that doesn’t involve drifting through another drunk late night.

Now as it comes to India, more and more coffee shops are attempting to build a community by doubling up as cultural spaces, opening themselves up to pop-ups, small bazaars, reading groups, film discussions, open mics, and live music. Besides featuring listening sessions, album launches, and curated vinyl sets by selectors, these places have also become the perfect platform for indie musicians, and audiences that want their morning coffee hangout to be a party in and of itself. Here are some cafes across the country that you can visit to catch a live performance.

1. Every Morning Cartel

Every Morning Cartel in Kandivali, Mumbai is a coffee-led cultural space with drinks like iced americano with cold foam and matcha, along with small plates like cookie brownies, all made in-house as part of a broader multi-roaster coffee setup . On the music side, they run EMC:Studios, a series of recorded DJ sets shot inside the café, with multiple sessions already released featuring different selectors. They've also hosted live DJ events with artists like Mr. Doss and Shaivyl. Alongside music, the space runs cupping sessions and small-format coffee experiences like their omakase-style tastings as well.

2. Blockheads

Blockheads in Ahmedabad is a vinyl-focused café inside ONE42, built around a listening bar with turntables and a record-led setup. The menu leans continental with small plates, all-day breakfast, and a mix of vegetarian and vegan options that sit alongside a coffee program powered by collaborations like Subko .It features vinyl listening sessions and DJ-led record nights  where selectors play across genres from jazz and classic rock to ambient, using the café’s in-house setup.

3. August Khar

August Cafe in Khar, Mumbai is known for a wide, crowd-friendly menu—Belgian waffles, loaded pancakes, all-day breakfast plates, and desserts like cakes and freakshakes show up often, alongside a full spread of continental mains. Their biggest draw on the music side is their Coffee Rave series — multiple editions like Coffee Rave 4.0 and 5.0 have already packed the space with DJs playing electronic sets right inside the café — but that’s only one part of it. They’ve also hosted open mics, poetry nights, and stand-up sets, along with smaller community-led gatherings that keep the space active beyond just dining.

4. Nifraam

Cafe Nifraam in Noida is a compact, easygoing spot built around comfort food —pastas, burgers, sandwiches, shakes, and quick café plates. The cafe hosts recurring Music Jam nights where anyone can join in, along with Bollywood jam sessions, open mic evenings, and 'Music Adda' gatherings that bring singers and musicians together. These nights keep coming back across months, with regular turnouts and a mix of planned performers and walk-ins, so the café keeps circling back to live, participatory music rather than one-off gigs.
