India’s Anshula Kant Becomes The First Female Managing Director Of The World Bank

With India steadily climbing the rungs of global success, the country has yet again made the headlines with the appointment of Anshula Kant, managing director of the State Bank of India, as the chief financial officer and managing director of the World Bank Group. Kant will work closely with the group’s CEO on mobilization of International Development Association and other financial resources, and will report directly to its president, David Malpass. Kant’s new position will also include overseeing financial reporting and risk management.

A graduate in Economic Honours from Lady Shri Ram College for Women and a Postgraduate in Economics from Delhi School of Economics, Kant started her career with SBI way back in 1983 as a Probationary Officer. With a career spanning over an extensive three and a half decades, she has gained tremendous experience in retail banking, corporate credit, cross-border trade and banking in developed markets – both retail and wholesale. “She’s excelled at a diverse array of leadership challenges including risk, treasury, funding, regulatory compliance and operations. I look forward to welcoming her to our management team as we work to increase our effectiveness in supporting good development outcomes,” Malpass said.

As CFO of the SBI, Anshula Kant managed USD 38 billion of revenues and total assets of USD 500 billion. Under her supervision, the organisation flourished as it improved its capital base, and focused on its long term sustainability. Her innovative use of technology greatly assisted in the smooth functioning of the State Bank, and she led the creation of investment opportunities while empowering risk management throughout the bank. Kant has held several key assignments in SBI including Chief General Manager of Mumbai Circle (Maharashtra & Goa) and CEO at SBI Singapore, where she was responsible for launching the retail operations, making SBI the first Indian bank to do so in that geography.

Anshula Kant’s appointment serves as a rightful testament to the nation’s greatest achievers. With visionaries like Sundar Pichai, Satya Nadella and Shantanu Narayen bearing the torch of international breakthrough in their respective fields, India is running toe-to-toe with some of the biggest giants in the global landscape. Indians are making their presence felt by excelling in a wide range of career spectrums, and are making the country proud in more ways than one.
