I’ve never come across anyone who was immune to the endearing charm of animals, who didn’t melt away at the sight of a little puppy trying to cross the road, who didn’t go from one Instagram cat video to another without squealing with joy. Of course, not everyone is as overt with their appreciation for our fellow furry beings. While some can’t help but pet every four-legged animal along the way, others are a little more wary and prefer their secret stash of online dog/cat videos instead.

Modern-age capitalism has plenty of down sides to it. However one that personally pinches yours truly is the commodification of animals — especially dogs. If you step out on the road, you’re likely to come across a (sometimes injured) stray dog every two hundred metres or a cat lurking in some shadowy corner of the street. One glance at them and you can tell that they’re homeless and underfed, probably spending their days scouring through garbage bins or if lucky, being fed by humans who pass by.

Yet, the trend of purchasing exorbitantly priced “exotic” breeds seems to be on the rise. Unfortunately, having a pet in India often comes with a certain level of insensitivity and greed which is not only harmful for the animals that are being forced to adjust to India’s tropical climate, but also to the indigenous ones who are being ignored at the cost of something ‘foreign’. But to tackle exactly this, World For All Animal Care And Adoptions (WFA) is organising their annual Adoptathon 2018.

Heralded as Asia’s largest pet adoption camp, this year’s Adoptathon will provide animal lovers the opportunity to meet, cuddle, play and even adopt 180 fully vaccinated, groomed, and healthy Indian breed puppies and kittens. The camp will be held over a span of 2 days from 1-2 December, 2018. The organisation has also partnered with several veterinary doctors, behaviorists, and adoption counsellors who will available to assist and provide expert advice to people on their new furry family members. The same assistance will continue after the smooth completion of the adoption process as well.

At the Adoptathon, expect to find a lot of stalls where you can also shop to your heart’s content - for yourself and your pets both. From organic handmade pet products at the Happy Puppy stall to picking up personalised stuff from Line And Coconut, there’s just so much to do. You can also grab a bite at BookAShow Cafe and pair it with Parle Agro’s beverages. And if that isn’t enough, this year’s Adoptathon will also feature some animal-loving celebrities like Farah Khan, Soha Ali Khan, Kunal Kemmu, and Anushka Manchanda.

But don’t forget, the real stars of the event will be our animal friends.

To know more about your possible soulmates whom you could take home forever, read on.

Puppies

I. Bartok

Bartok was named after the Albino bat from the Disney classic, Anastasia. The resemblance is uncanny, isn’t it? Bartok has no judgement of his age and size, will happily come and sit on your lap, and lick your nose till it probably falls right off!

II. Mia

You know how kids will grab your fingers and take you towards their favourite toy or to play? That’s exactly what Mia does!

III. Miss May

Look at that smile! Are you really not going to give her treats for destroying your shoes?

IV. Dobby

Dobby, as her name suggests, loves people! Hugs? Love! Kisses? Love! Cuddles? Love! Playtime? Love! She has mesmerising green eyes, and ears exactly just like the fictional Harry Potter goblin Dobby! Intrigued, aren’t you? Would you like to meet her?

V. Zoey

Her second name should probably have been little miss goofball. Having been rescued off the street while her face was maggot infested, she has had a remarkable recovery. Zoey is now a super healthy, super affectionate pup and for her, play time is all the time!

VI. Stitch

Got fish? Stitch wants. Stitch, when rescued was a tiny little fur ball petrified of everything and everyone to the bone. Little did we know that he’d grow up to be an extra affectionate pupper. Other pups are now envious of how friendly Stitch has become. He loves lap cuddles, and kisses!

Kittens

VII. Drogon

Drogon is totally obsessed with food and is a master at stealing it off your plate when you’re not looking. He loves playing with foil balls and is often found hiding with them under blankets and in bags. His rescuer had a dog and three cats and he tormented them all despite being one-tenth their size.

VIII. Jaggu

Jaggu Dada is looking for a home that can handle his immense cuteness. He is de-wormed, litter -trained and accomplished in the art of making everyone fall in love with him. And the best part - he is very playful and loves being petted! Also, he’s the feline version of Charlie Chaplin (see nose).

IX. Noddy Chaplin

Noddy is quieter, loves to cuddle and is known for his adorable meows. Chaplin, on the other hand, is always up to play, fight. He is always screaming/meowing, infectiously energetic, and tries to keep Noddy on his toes all the time. You’ll find Noddy chasing stuff around the house while Chaplin slips into your lap for endless cuddles. They are the purrfect package of cute and funny.

X. Ollie

Little Ollie is a heart-throb and expresses himself like a human. When he needs food, he will meow till you give him his favourite mix of dry and wet food. It’s extremely entertaining to watch him entertain himself. Try to hold him and he will find a way to wiggle out like a fish. If he wants to make friends he will find a way to do that. His favourite pastime is to hide under the bed cover and sleep. His fearlessness is contagious.

XI. Sabrina

Meet Sabrina, our total entertainment package plus a model in the making, as you can clearly see. Shes a lap-cat when she’s sleepy, a gymnast when she’s playful, and a poser when the camera is facing her.

Head to the Adoptathon this weekend to take one of these furry angels home!
