Two weeks into the new year, we have reached the point where many of us abandon our resolutions. The gyms that were packed on the 1st of January can already see their attendance rates dwindling as people lose their resolve. I’ve always struggled with New Year’s resolutions. Unfortunately, we don’t become new people once the clock strikes twelve and fireworks fill the sky. But for years, I held onto my hopes that I’d suddenly find a love for the gym, forcing myself into workouts that felt more like punishment than a celebration of my body and its potential strength.
Year after year, I’d oscillate between constant, excessive exercise and weeks of inactivity, unable to find joy in fitness. This toxic pattern only changed once my friends, after much convincing, dragged me to an indoor climbing gym. I had dreaded it, mostly out of precalculated embarrassment over how awful at it I was convinced I would be. But after just one afternoon at the gym, my entire perspective around fitness started to shift. For what felt like the first time ever, exercise felt fun, and my sore muscles the next day felt like a badge of honour, a sign that I was already growing stronger. Now, almost two years later, I find myself looking forward not just to climbing, but to other forms of movement too, whether it be a spin class or an evening lifting weights.
For those of us who don’t feel at home at the gym just yet, we’ve compiled a list of alternative fitness opportunities in Mumbai to remind you that fitness should be fun and that there’s no one way to achieve your goals.
