Finishing a gorgeous pleated skirt with gota patti at the hem, or integrating the traditional chikankari with elements of recycled reused rubber from an old bicycle tire, on a silk organza blouse, Graine India is a brand that bridges their conscious philosophy and eclectic sensibilities with aplomb. Referring to their muse as those who wear clothes that are “a polite introduction of one's personality, their strength being defined by their choice of lifestyle moving from a domestic environment to the busy cubicles of work to a social lovable gathering in the evening.”
Co-founded by twin sisters Harshna Kandhari and Mannat Sethi, GRAINE is a connection of the heart and the mind, according to their website. Harshna with her business acumen and master's in finance lead the business aspects, Mannat with her creative heart, a love for history and a degree in fashion and passion to boot, came together to create GRAINE. To contemporise the beloved Indian craft techniques through modern and innovative silhouettes, GRAINE reimagines the familiar. The earlier mentioned techniques of chikankaari and badla work have been contemporised and use repurposed rubber tyres. This material exploration has become GRAINE’s signature.
Perhaps it is the beautiful intersection of two perspectives that has given GRAINE its mettle; juxtaposing contrasting perspectives and materials to create cohesive, inspired attire. While the brand has done several different collections over the years and has been the recipient of multiple recognitions and awards, GRAINE is a brand that is constantly evolving. The founders consider that their journey with GRAINE has been about capturing the essence of stillness. Their latest collection ‘Palate Cleanser’ is one that truly embodies this overarching philosophy.
"We believe in the power of pauses and hence this collection is more than just a physical necessity; it's a metaphor for life's transitions. We believe in finding clarity and inspiration in these quiet moments of reflection."
Mannat Sethi & Harshna Kandhari, Co-founders, GRAINE
Showcasing a series of material experimentations and artworks they have crafted at their studio, Palate Cleanser is the epitome of eclecticism. The techniques used range from threadwork, metal wire embroideries, innovative patterns, and surface developments, to distressed construction. The materials range from light fabrics like Satin Organza and Cotton to those that are the preferred canvas for design exploration like Denim, Mesh, and Velvet. From unique silhouettes of paper bag shorts and handkerchief skirts to classics like panelled summer jackets and circular skirts, to almost couture-like metallic mesh vest crafts with metal wire details, each design from the collection is refreshingly a ‘palate cleanser’.
Blending character, creativity and craft, GRAINE approaches traditional Indian craft with a modern, innovation-driven perspective. Focusing on staying true to its core elements of repurposing discarded rubber tyres, while also reviving craft techniques; all while being truly original, GRAINE’s latest collection is an inspired depiction of the brand's overarching identity.
