I grew up in the era of fanfiction and blind conformity aka the 2010s. 'OTP' or 'one true pairing', was part of my middle-school vocabulary, and I’ll even admit to reading long-winded romance fanfics about Hermione Granger and Draco Malfoy. We were obsessed with shipping unlikely couples, but ironically, we often dressed the same. There was a kind of performative individuality to the fashion of that time; a desire to stand out while still fitting in. A decade later, while the Y2K revival and Tumblr-core aesthetics make a return, conversations around fashion have become more introspective. The question on everyone’s mind now is: how do you dress like yourself?

One True Pairing, a Delhi-based fashion label founded by real-life couple Parnika Jain and Praful Surana might have a few ideas on how to answer the above question. The brand’s ethos is simple yet quietly radical: to create pieces that help people find their own "one true pairing" with clothes that don’t follow trends, but still feel timeless, personal, and bold. And yes, the name is a rather cute nod to their own relationship too.

“We chose the story over the trends,” Parnika tells me when asked how the brand started. She describes a process that began with feelings rather than fashion forecasts. Growing up in Jaipur, she remembers curating mood boards filled with moments that caught her eye — textures, spaces, moods, and letting the silhouettes emerge from there. This meant drawing, sketching, and developing samples before even considering putting a label on it. She studied at NIFT Delhi and then later at Parsons, all to hone her design skills. All this while, Praful was in a very different setting as he dived into the world of manufacturing. But when they got together, they somehow realised a veritable gap in the market for garments that were premium and intentionally crafted, but sold not at very high prices. Soon enough, Parnika was creating prototypes and samples, many of which never saw the light of day, because they didn’t align with the story they wanted to tell with the brand.

Praful adds, “We weren’t interested in just making things for the sake of a collection. It had to have a feeling of expression.” That expression took the form of pieces that feel quietly powerful with structured silhouettes, clean lines, tonal contrasts, and an unmistakable attention to detail. Think androgynous jackets with high collars and zip details, pleated skirts in slate grey, or tailored pants with versatile fastenings. While they may have called themselves streetwear at one point, their customers are those who don’t fit into boxes. Their looks are designed to be layered, re-styled, and lived in.

From the beginning, One True Pairing has placed ethics and intention at the centre of their production. The duo is clear-eyed about the complexities of the fashion supply chain, but that hasn’t stopped them from making choices they can stand by. “We don’t use leather,” Parnika says firmly. “We’ve consciously chosen cruelty-free materials. We’re not 100% sustainable yet, but we are always asking the question: 'How can we do this better?'” The materials are primarily locally sourced, and the pieces are made in Delhi by a team of 12 people. “Even our buttons are sourced within India,” adds Praful.

The focus on local doesn't mean the brand is insular. If anything, their pieces have found resonance with young shoppers with a global aesthetic who value quiet confidence over flash or conforming. Parnika describes how overwhelmed they were by the response when they launched. “People started coming back to us with messages like, ‘I wore this to an interview and felt so good in it,’ or ‘This blazer made me feel like a boss.’ We didn’t expect it at that scale.” What’s especially interesting is how One True Pairing’s clothes make people feel like themselves — whatever that might look like. “Any piece you pick from the brand isn’t following a trend,” Parnika explains, “but it still makes a statement. It’s bold without being loud. It allows for layering, for playing with your own style.” That kind of modularity — the ability to make a piece your own, and style it for a corporate setting or an evening out — is what sets the brand apart.

Their website is a mood board of their philosophy: monochrome edits, utilitarian silhouettes, and a colour palette that lets the wearer stand out. There's even something unique about their packaging that the founding duo shares have had customers reach out to them about. From the thoughtful packaging, to the fabric quality and the attention to detail that customers frequently mention in their reviews, they continue to innovate based on the input from their community. “It’s a full-circle moment,” Praful says. “To know someone is opening this and feeling seen — it keeps us going.”

It’s hard not to smile at the layers of meaning in their brand name. “It’s both personal and universal,” Parnika laughs. “We’re each other’s one true pairing, but the idea is also that you can find your OTP. That piece that just fits into your life so seamlessly just feels like it was made for you.”

At a time when fashion is increasingly dictated by algorithmic trends and viral aesthetics, One True Pairing is a great reminder that personal style doesn’t have to be conformative. It can be quiet, it can be deliberate, and it can be yours to wear with pride.
