I still remember my school days when I had to write page after page until I could feel like hands going numb but the fear of the school teacher reprimanding me for not finishing my homework or worse, the dread of my mother's tight slaps would keep me going. If a genie granted me three wishes then, one of them would've definitely been for a magic pen that automatically did all of my homework. Well, thankfully, those days are behind me now. However, I cannot help but say this with a tinge of jealousy towards all those who are present students now and get to enjoy the incredible invention by a 22-year-old Indian, who has created a homework machine powered by ChatGPT. This invention is the closest thing to how I envisioned my magic pen to be.

Kerala-born designer, engineer and entrepreneur Devadath PR is the brains behind an invention that basically does your homework in your own handwriting. Using Python as the programming language, along with his in-depth knowledge of robotics, automation and artificial intelligence, he created this ingenious machine when he was tired of writing hundreds of pages of his college lab records. His invention comes as a tangible alternative to rote memorization and laborious and monotonous hand-written homework, assignments and record-keeping. A funny anecdote occurred when Devadath submitted homework to his college professor for the first time, using his machine. The professor smelled something fishy as the handwriting was too perfect and uniform. When caught, the young engineer went back home and wrote a 120-line code to make the handwriting output more natural, human-like and less uniform. Voila! His reworked method managed to fool the teacher who had previously caught him.

Devanath went on to further improve and refine his homework machine. He created a software to make the handwriting generation more efficient. He also generated a cursive font algorithm. The machine has a page-turning mechanism for A4 sheets. Each individual’s handwriting is recorded as input for the machine via an Android tablet with a digitizer. He has recently further enhanced the handwriting recording process.

Devanath has always been a science whiz. At the age of 15, he designed and built an affordable CoreXY 3D Printer, with which he has been making innovative stuff since. His recent invention, the homework machine has garnered him much fame and prestigious rewards. While many may argue that his invention is making things a bit too convenient for students than required, there is no shadow of a doubt that it is a damn fine idea that he came up with.
