Punjab has been reeling under relentless monsoon rains, with rivers breaching danger levels and vast tracts of farmland and villages submerged. Several districts, including Ludhiana, Patiala, and Amritsar, have recorded unusually heavy downpours in recent days, making this one of the wettest Augusts in decades. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts across multiple regions, warning of further intense rainfall. Flooded roads, breached embankments, and widespread waterlogging have left many areas cut off, complicating relief efforts and straining local infrastructure.

The scale of the crisis is stark: more than two and a half lakh people have been directly affected, with thousands displaced to temporary shelters and nearly thirty lives lost so far. Entire stretches of farmland lie under water, threatening crops and livelihoods at a massive scale. Rescue and relief operations are underway with the deployment of NDRF teams, the Army, and the Air Force, who have been carrying out evacuations and supply drops in the worst-hit districts. Schools and colleges remain closed across the state, while the administration has urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and keep emergency numbers at hand.

To ensure safety and timely assistance, the Punjab government has activated 24×7 control rooms and circulated district-level emergency contacts. Alongside official efforts, several NGOs and community organisations are running langars, setting up shelters, and mobilising resources on the ground.
