In February 2025, the Tennis world watched in awe as Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi, a WTA unranked wildcard entrant, took the Mumbai Open 2025 WTA 125 tournament by storm. It was only her fifth professional event. In the main draw of the tournament, the 15-year-old wunderkind from Coimbatore went on to defeat Iryna Shymanovich from Belarus, former WTA Top 50 player Zarina Diyas from Kazakhstan, and Mei Yamaguchi from Japan to reach the semifinals where she lost to Jill Teichmann from Switzerland.

Although Rajeshwaran could not win the tournament, her stellar performance at the Mumbai Open marked her arrival in the world tennis arena. This also made Maaya the first player born in 2009 or after to reach the top four in a main-draw event at the professional level of the highly competitive sport. She is now ranked inside the top 700 after her historic run, making her the youngest Indian tennis player to earn a WTA ranking.

A Queen's Sacrifice: A Mother's Love Is Propelling India's Latest Chess Triumph

Born on June 12, 2009, in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, Maaya stumbled into tennis almost by accident — a playful after-school hobby that soon ignited an extraordinary pursuit of excellence. By age 10, she had already set her sights on a professional tennis career.

A regular on the junior circuit since 2022, Maaya won five junior titles (four J60s and one J100) in 2023. She also earned an invitation to the Australian Open 2023 Under-14 showcase the same year. Although her junior Grand Slam debut in Melbourne in 2024 ended in a first-round qualifying loss to Germany’s Sonja Zhenikhova, the setback only fueled her resolve.

Later that year, Rajeshwaran stunned again at India’s Senior National Championships, reaching the final with wins over seasoned players like Riya Bhatia before losing to Vaidehee Chaudhari. Her near-perfect run earned her a senior debut at the ITF W15 tournament in Egypt, marking her transition to the pro arena.

2024 proved to be a transformative year in Rajeshawaran's career. She trained at the Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy in Mallorca for a week in 2024, and her impressive showing at the academy earned her a fully-funded one-year training scholarship with the prestigious institution founded by five-time World No. 1 Spanish Tennis legend Rafael Nadal. Having commenced her training at the academy in 2025, Maaya is set to make her mark at grand slam events in junior draws over the coming year.
