Are You Trending? Vol. III: 100 Days Of What Now?

A quick disclaimer before I psycho-analyze this newfangled trend that has taken the Internet by storm; this isn’t a way for me to rain on your parade- if you’re in on this whole thing and it's making you happy - that’s totally cool. I’m just here to tell you it's bogus.

The Internet loves challenges, even if it requires you to shove a handful of cinnamon powder down your throat or douse yourself in a tub of milk (go figure)--everyone loves being the Internet’s guinea pig.  And it makes it excusable too. I mean could you imagine the conversation you would have to have if these challenges didn’t exist?

“Hey man, why are you eating that raw onion?”

awkward silence

But this time, it's different.

“Hey man, why are you eating that raw onion?”

“Because the internet told me to.”

“Oh, I’m sorry I asked.”

Adding to the list of these “social experiments” is a new trend that requires less saltine crackers and gallons of milk (unless you’re into that kind of thing) - its philosophy is rooted in uncovering an overarching ideal of happiness; a digital panacea to transform your dismal regular life into a life you are grateful for. The #100daysofhappiness challenge is a 100-day challenge that requires people to post a picture of something that makes them happy everyday on several social networking portals. In return, they are struck by a deep sense of fulfillment for just being alive, often validated by the likes they get on Facebook and Instagram.
