Nestled in the vibrant city of Pondicherry, where the confluence of cultures and artistic expressions creates a unique backdrop, Indianostrum Theatre has been crafting memorable theatrical experiences for over a decade. The theater troupe has consistently pushed the boundaries of storytelling through their various productions over the years. This weekend, Bangalore has the opportunity to witness their latest work, 'School For Wives' - a multilingual play that promises to be a cultural and artistic delight.
'School For Wives' is set to grace the stage at Jagriti Theatre on the 8th of September, followed by two performances at Rangashankara on the 9th of September. The play is a unique blend of theater, music, and dance, inspired by the rich traditions of Indian folk forms, Therukoothu and Lavni. The narrative of 'School For Wives' offers a contemporary adaptation of Molière's classic 'L'ecole de Femmes'. It delves into the intriguing story of Agnes, who is purchased by the 42-year-old Arnolphe with the intent of molding her into the perfect wife. Isolated from the world to preserve her innocence, Agnes's life takes an unexpected turn when she falls in love with the young and charismatic Horace. This gripping tale unfolds against a multilingual backdrop, weaving music and dance into its fabric, offering a fresh perspective on a timeless story.
From Pondicherry to Bengaluru
Before gracing the stage in Bengaluru, "School For Wives" had its initial run in Pondicherry. From the 11th to the 14th of August 2023, audiences in Pondicherry were treated to a series of captivating performances. The play's ability to resonate with diverse audiences is a testament to Indianostrum Theatre's commitment to transcending linguistic and cultural boundaries through their art.
Founded in 2007 by Koumarane Valavane, Indianostrum Théâtre has played a pivotal role in Pondicherry's cultural landscape. It began as a mere endeavor staging productions in various spaces in Chennai. However, the turning point came in 2012 when they found a home at "Salle de Jeanne d’Arc," an 80-year-old French Cinema Theatre in Pondicherry. Unfortunately, in 2013, tragedy struck as a fire consumed their cherished space. Yet, their spirit remained unbroken, and with support from friends and well-wishers, they rose from the ashes.
Since then, Indianostrum Theatre has continued to flourish, producing 12 plays and participating in theatre festivals both in India and abroad. Their work has garnered critical acclaim and won the hearts of audiences worldwide, a testament to their unwavering dedication to the art of theater.

The film received multiple awards, including the NETPAC award for Best Asian Film.
