The feeling of belonging to two cultures is unique. It's an existence between worlds, not quite half of each cultural experience, nor double them, but rather, something else entirely. You’re shaped by your surroundings, but are rooted in a home, a bloodline, or even just a physical experience, tied to the culture you’ve inherited. For the creators of Cavya Sound, this experience lies in the intersection between a Sri Lankan Tamil heritage and an upbringing in Frankfurt, Germany.
Cavya Sound is a creative studio and lifestyle brand that dips its toes into several artistic ventures to platform these cultural experiences and voices. In their introductory video, the studio emphasises their goal of highlighting a Tamil perspective, with a core ethos of “owning your roots and helping shape a future where diversity is real and respected.” Rather than sticking to just one medium, the brand works with music, visual campaigns, and creative consulting, all of which started as a way to express who they are.
“For us, culture is not a trend. It’s something built, it’s something felt.”Cavya Sound’s Co-Founder Senny
Cavya Sound launched in July 2024 and has released three musical projects since. Each of their singles reinterprets and remixes Tamil music, all sung by vocalist Jonna Yogarajah. Their first single, '3', samples the Tamil modern classic 'Kannazhaga', now sung in Yogarajah’s sultry, deep voice over a chill trap beat. To accompany this reimagining of the original song, Cavya Sound released a series of visuals set in a South Asian grocery store.
Their other projects are also lo-fi Tamil songs, but each has a distinct visual campaign. 'Remo' is a chill track, taking us to an open field with bright, saturated skies. Vasam' is a dancier track with two different visual sets. The first is fashion-focused, as Tamil models in streetwear pose for us. The second is in a heavily carpeted, artsy room, similar in vibe, yet entirely different in approach.
Their work shows us an integration of modern worlds, something often left unseen. While most brands and artists lean into tradition when showcasing their cultural experiences Cavya sound chooses to highlight both the past and the present in equal measure — paying homage to what has existed previously while celebrating everything that exists and is till to come.
