Homegrown Short Film ‘Farewell’ Explores Soft Masculinity Through The Lens Of Friendship

Disha Bijolia

Like all human relationships, friendships often stand as resilient threads that require constant nurturing, connection, and maintenance. Much like any intimate association, the bonds of camaraderie demand effort, understanding, and a willingness to navigate the ebbs and flows of shared experiences. Soham Kundu, a London-based filmmaker and a University of the Arts London graduate, ventures into this intricate terrain with his latest short film, Farewell.

The film unfolds the narrative of Afan, a 19-year-old grappling with heartbreak, joined by his close friend Kush, aged 30, on a day's trip to commemorate Kush's impending marriage. The tensions that surface during this seemingly celebratory journey force them to confront their past, unraveling the intricacies of their bond amidst shared grief and aspirations for a brighter future. The film addresses the between-the-lines dynamics of relationships that are so often ignored or ran over.

Farewell is an exploration of intimate friendship between two men, delving into the multifaceted theme of masculinity, particularly within the context of individuals of South Asian descent in the UK. It's refreshing and somewhere revolutionizing to see real stories of soft masculinity among South Asian men portrayed with all its rawness; especially when it stands against the ancient precedent of machismo. Soham Kundu's work strives to normalize the nuanced complexities of South Asian identities, offering audiences a poignant and insightful glimpse into the challenges and joys that come with forging connections.

As the film navigates the intersections of friendship, masculinity, and vulnerability, it becomes a compelling piece that transcends cultural boundaries. The narrative not only invites reflection on the intricacies of human relationships but also prompts contemplation on the societal expectations and norms surrounding masculinity. The short film, currently making its rounds at festivals, promises to be a captivating exploration of the complexities that underlie the bonds of friendship.
