What is remembered, lives…
The beauty of human connection lies in impermanence, we have limited time with our loved ones however we do have the capacity to foster a bond that pertains forever. This connection is formed in the material world and is intertwined with the many objects that we associate with one another. Hence, when coping with grief, many find comfort in the physical belongings left behind by our family and friends.
A recent photo series by visual artist Imdad Barbhuyan captures this experience by archiving the objects owned by his Dadi in a new light. The series was meant to be a celebration of her life and of womanhood, likening her to the fabled ‘tree of life’. These objects were adorned with life-giving embellishments to show her presence within her absence. Showcasing how material objects too can imbibe someone’s spirit and energy within them.
More importantly it is the human quality, associations and memories that can turn the ordinary into sacred. While the connections we share are immaterial and rather spiritual, these objects are the only traces left behind in the physical world. They hold onto the magic and eternal beauty of a life lived; essentially connecting us with the departed by bridging the gap between life and whatever lies after that.
We show love through the act of remembering. By fostering the memories and reminiscing about our loved ones we keep them alive. Imdad’s images are crafted with intricate association with this remembrance and the obsolete nature of connection. Through the use of elements from the natural world like flowers, fruits, water and leaves, he weaves narratives around ideas of memory and loss. Inspiring a deeper connection with our inner selves and the natural world.
