This Week In Culture: A Court Of Carpets, Rohan Bopanna, 'Bird Milk', & More

Sobhika Vasanthan

One month.

In exactly one month, I'll be boarding a flight that will change the trajectory of my life. For many weeks now, I've been mentally preparing for the cultural shock awaiting me as a young woman in a foreign land.

As Indians, we understand a stifling co-dependency, a reliance on community. We're never truly alone. We're used to leaning on others. But this journey of mine: leaving India to pursue a Masters – it demands independence. So, I find myself questioning whether I have what it takes. New faces, customs, places: a threshold we all must cross at some point in our lives.

However daunting this may all seem, I’m also holding out hope. I know that humans, after all, are wired for connection. We build communities wherever we land. This chapter of my life feels like a stepping stone into what I call 'Real Adulthood': budgeting, taxes (ugh!), laundry, managing time: the seemingly mundane superpowers of 'stable' people. Skills I've seen countless others wield with ease seem impossibly complex to me right now.

But then I recall a similar journey I had to undertake a few years ago, when I left home to pursue my Bachelor's in a new city, and how that ended up being the best decision of my life. I've learned more about myself and my ability to withstand the world's peculiarities with each leap of faith I take.

The next chapter is a wild, exhilarating one: a path many have taken before me. As universal rites of passages go, I know I'll make mistakes, stumble, and learn.

I'll also crave the comforts of a desi home. I’m bracing myself for the inevitable culture shock, homesickness, and the terrifying realisation that I might actually have to eat bland and tasteless variations of what they think is 'Indian food' for a long time. But I have a feeling, deep down, that through it all, my core identity will remain strong. My Indian roots will travel with me wherever I go and it'll be a constant piece of home I'll always carry. After all, I am, and always will be, Homegrown.

Here's what we have for you this week:
