India’s First Gender Park In Kerala Empowers & Encourages Women In Various Spheres

Meghna Mathew

The widespread phenomenon of women tackling society in a headstrong manner will be seen as a rule and not an exception only when it is normalised thoroughly, across all aspects of our lives. It’s not a tough concept to grasp –– it never was –– but to further it, we need concerted initiatives by passionate citizens.

In one such step, Kerala now witnesses India’s first Gender Park. The Government of Kerala along with UN Women set up this 24-acre park in Kozhikode (Calicut) which will ‘act as a convergence centre for various projects, cultural and academic engagements’. The space will include and encourage all women in their social endeavours, and aid them through seminars, conventions and activities.

The Park will include a Gender Museum, International Convention Centre, International Women’s Trade Centre and more.

In accordance with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Gender Park is a Green Campus –– it takes measures to minimize carbon footprint and is also sensitive and inclusive in its infrastructure.

Open to the public since 14 February, the country’s first Gender Park sets the right precedence for the empowerment of Indian women and provides what will hopefully be a safe and bustling space in the future.
