Mumbai, Book A Front Row Seat To See The Rare Blue Blood Moon Tomorrow

Shireen Jamooji

One of the most flippantly used terms has got to be ‘Once in a lifetime opportunity’. Sure the thrill of bungee jumping or feeding cuddly koala bears are memories that will always be treasured but when it comes to truly exclusive events, the grandest ones are organised by the universe itself. This week on the 31st of January, three mighty cosmic events - the lunar eclipse, the supermoon and a blue moon will all align for the first time in 150 years.

For astronomy veterans, it’s probably already down in your calendars as the biggest event of the season but for novices who are still looking for guidance, Astrophile has you covered. This is another edition of a series organised by alternative experience company, Awestritch dedicated to showcasing the wonders of the stars in a way that’s accessible to the public. On Wednesday they’ll be holding a viewing party at Bayview Cafe, Colaba where you’ll be provided with reading materials, telescopes and expert guidance to best enjoy this phenomenon.

Termed as the Super Blue Blood Moon, this anomalous attraction is comprised of - as you might have guessed - three facets. A Blue Moon is when there are two full moons within a single month, a Supermoon occurs when the moon’s perigee (closest approach to Earth) coincides with a full moon, and this month it’s all happening at the same time as the lunar eclipse. Even for those not in the know, that’s a pretty impressive line-up. So if you’re a closest astro-geek or just hoping to see something amazing this week, this might be the place for you.
