Sex In The Time Of A Pandemic: Online Sale Of Sex Toys Boom

Meghna Mathew

While other industries are going limp during the Coronavirus pandemic and are experiencing a slowdown in growth and sales, one industry seems to be booming — the sexual health industry, particularly sex toys.

Thatspersonal.com, one of India’s leading online platforms for purchasing sex toys disclosed a report titled, ‘India Uncovered: Insightful Analysis of Sex Products’ which reveals that the sale of sex toys has boomed by 65 per cent. The survey was done over 22 million people visiting the website and 3,35,000 purchases.

According to the Times of India, Mumbai bagged the first place for the highest number of buyers, while Bengaluru and New Delhi trail just behind. Lucknow, Jaipur and Chandigarh were the forerunners amongst Tier-2 cities. Surat, however, was revealed to be making big purchases averaging Rs 3,900.

A FirstPost report also uncovers that the online sale of condoms and pills skyrocketed during the lockdown period as well. It states that it experienced a 24-48 per cent increase in enquiries and subsequent sales.

The increase in sales in a country filled with taboos around sex and sexual pleasure comes as a sign that more Indians are embracing their sexuality, and also looking after their sexual well-being.
