The World Surf League Is Going To Make Its India Debut On The Beaches Of Mahabalipuram

Mahabalipuram, nestled on the Tamil Nadu coastline, boasts a thriving surfing scene that captivates both locals and adventurers. It's also the chosen spot for the World Surf League (WSL) which is gearing up for its debut competition on Indian shores. This August, all eyes will be on Mahabalipuram will play host to the inaugural Tamil Nadu International Surf Open Qualifying Series (QS) 3,000 event, scheduled from August 14 to August 20, 2023. As over 50 promising surfers from the Asia region, coupled with India's top 20 talents, converge on the enchanting long right-handers of Mahabalipuram Beach, the world is set to witness a thrilling display of skill, daring, and camaraderie.

Mahabalipuram features right-hand point breaks (a wave that breaks to a surfer's right) close to the renowned Shore Temple, formed by strategically positioned boulders that prevent the temple from falling into the Bay of Bengal. Stretching over 100 meters, these waves offer opportunities for dynamic rail surfing, aerial manoeuvres, and occasional tube rides. The location's previous hosting of national and international amateur events, conducted by the Tamil Nadu Surfing Association and the Surfing Federation of India, underscores its readiness to welcome the WSL's QS event.
