Alighieri Is A Diasporic South Asian Jewellery Brand Inspired By Dante's Inferno

Fathima Abdul Kader

Alighieri is a diasporic jewellery brand from the UK, inspired by the founder Rosh Mahtani’s fascination with the literary works of the great Dante Alighieri. The brand started in 2014, has become recognised for its timeless, original sensibilities and literary inspiration. It recently expanded its repertoire to include homeware with its 'Casa Collection'.

Growing up in Zambia, Rosh Mahtani spent her childhood immersed in imaginative play and natural treasures. These formative experiences, combined with her later academic pursuit of French and Italian at Oxford University, where she discovered Dante’s works, laid the foundation for Alighieri. The brand was founded by Rosh during a particular time of darkness and uncertainty in her personal life; mirroring Dante's story of being lost and listless. Alighieri’s jewellery reflects this journey, with each piece acting as a talisman symbolising human imperfection and vulnerability. The brand’s ethos is deeply rooted in storytelling and the transformative power of objects and this overarching theme has been carried over into the newly launched Casa Collection.

The homeware collection features 12 pieces and invites patrons to create their own rituals at home, drawing inspiration from ancient totems and prehistoric rock formations. It also pays homage to the significance of daily spiritual practices, from the simple act of setting the table to the enchanting ritual of lighting a candle. Each item in this collection is hand-crafted using the ancient practice of sand casting, which ensures that every piece is unique and filled with a sense of history, literary meaning, and craftsmanship. One stand-out piece from this collection is the Totemic Devotion Cutlery Set, that pays tribute to the communal act of sharing a meal while drawing inspiration from tribal hunting tools and rock formations.

Crafted in 24kt gold-plated brass and stainless steel, it transforms the daily meal into a divine experience. From the 24 carat gold-plated brass ‘Bearer of Fortune Dishes’ that celebrates the everyday magic in the act of setting the table to the ‘Floating Pebble Candlestick’ inspired by prehistoric rocks in a river bed, the range of products from the new home collection is a great addition to those who like surrounding themselves with functional objects of art. The Molten Gold Bottle Openers featured in Alighieri’s debut home collection are specifically inspired by the sea and are designed to elevate the simple act of opening a drink.

From its jewellery to every last spoon and candle stand, the pieces from Alighieri are hand-crafted in the UK using 100% recycled silver and/or gold and follow ethical production practices to keep their carbon footprint low.

Original with their designs and mindful of sustainability, the pieces from Alighieri tell a story, while also supporting a meaningful creation processes. By extending their line of handmade objects of art into the home space, Alighieri is inviting people to transform everyday, mundane acts of dining and hosting into sacred rituals with the totems and talismans needed to make it a magical experience, every single time.
