The humble matchbox arrived in India in the early twentieth century. Initially imported from Sweden and Japan, this familiar everyday carry object soon became so popular among the masses that the matchbox — colloquially known as ‘maachis’ — became one of the most enduring icons of 20th-century Indian visual culture. As India rapidly industrialised in the post-Independence period, matchboxes became storytelling tools for progress and nation-building. The designs reflected modernity through illustrations of radios, telephones, trains, aeroplanes, automobiles, and farmers tending their fields.
Comet’s latest limited-edition sneaker drop, ‘Maachis’, draws inspiration from the bold visual language of vintage matchbox labels, transforming the sneaker into a collectible piece of streetwear. Made from premium beige suede, Maachis comes alive in striking red streaks, nostalgic typography, and vintage-inspired graphics drawn from classic Indian matchbox art. Each pair of the 800 limited-edition sneakers arrives in a matchbox-inspired shoebox, making the unboxing experience as fun as wearing the sneakers. Hidden beneath the back tab of the sneaker is a fully operational striker strip capable of lighting a match.
