How 14-Year-Old Maleesha Kharwa Went From The Slums To Collaborating With Indian Brands

Gulbahaar Kaur

The journey of this 14 year old model with over 218K followers on social media is one for the books. Maleesha Kharwa is a young girl who grew up in the slums of Mumbai and dared to dream big. The talented model has been the subject of a short film documentary titled ‘Live Your Fairytale’ by Jas Sagu and Arsala Qureishi. She has also graced the front covers of multiple fashion magazines and has close association to a number of homegrown brands.

One of them being a pioneer of the luxury ayurvedic industry, Forest Essentials. The brand has close links with multiple ventures that are related to women's empowerment and their most recent collection is intended to enhance the confidence of young girls. The Yuvati Selection Programme hopes to shine light on the experience of female adolescence, which is typically where young girls find their own identity. The term Yuvati is a phase in ayurveda that celebrates the stepping stones to womanhood.

This collaboration is also helping Maleesha in achieving an education; truly helping her embrace and make the most this period of growth and learning. Additionally through the Yuvati Collection they are also contributing to Project Paathshal, with 10% of the proceeds to be donated to provide children from underprivileged backgrounds access to education. The campaign centres the idea of believing in your dreams. By promoting Maleesha’s particular brand of daring they hope to inspire many more who wish to break away and forge their own path.
