Often times, the Indian audience fails to give enough recognition to the wonderful world of regional cinema –– from water-tight narratives to impressive visuals, many of these films, in large part, deserve more attention than what they currently garner.

This year, the Indian entry to the Oscars under the Best International Feature Film category of Oscars 2022 is the Tamil movie, Koozhangal (Pebbles). Filmmaker PS Vinothraj was evidently over the moon with this news, as he spent the better part of his Sunday expressing gratitude to those recognising this major achievement on Twitter.

Koozhangal, as mentioned on The Scroll, is based on PS Vinothraj’s sister’s experience –– loosely adapting it to the story of a young boy’s quest to bring his mother back home due to a violent father, the film has previously won several film awards.

“The selection of this stature has given me the faith and belief that I had taken the right decision in making a film which I wanted to. It has also given me an added responsibility to continue making good cinema,” Vinothraj told The Times Of India.

A film with immense purpose and meaning, Koozhangal makes for the perfect Oscars 2022 entry –– with due congratulations to the whole team, we also owe them for taking regional cinema to newer heights.
