Homegrown Staff

With its origins in the ancient scriptures of the world, calligraphy is an art that provides a playground for human creativity and skill. It is a gestural art incorporating more variation in form than typographic writing which is made mechanically and often within narrow technical constraints. There are many different types of calligraphy out there nowadays. People use it in a variety of ways and for a variety of occasions, from hand lettered wedding invitations, mirror seating charts, and custom cards to logo design, chalk menus and even tattoos! Calligraphy can also be created using a variety of tools such as pointed pen, broad-edge pen, brush pen, folded ruling pen, just to name a few. Pointed Pen Calligraphy is one such art that is at a nascent but growing stage in India with individuals running short on access to the right form of knowledge.

One of the world’s most renowned, masterpenman Barbara Calzolari from Italy is set to host a calligraphy workshop in Mumbai, organised by The Bombay Lettering Company founder, Sanjana Chatlani (a calligrapher and lettering artist). Barbara is one of the 12 master penmen across the globe. The major highlight of this magnum opus is the amazing panel discussion organized which will cover the different avenues in which calligraphy, lettering, and type design are moving.

Panelists include the likes of India’s most renowned Master Calligrapher - Achyut Palav, Lettering Artist, Typographer, and Creative Director - Chandan Mahimkar along with Italian Masterpenman Barbara Calzolari. Calligrapher, Lettering Artist and Founder of The Bombay Lettering Company - Sanjana Chatlani will further discuss their journeys and how they carved out an entrepreneurial path for themselves through this art form to motivate budding artists.

The purpose of inviting Barbara to India is to get these individuals in tandem with the calligraphy space across the globe and share the art with the coming generations. The Bombay Lettering aims to ensure access to everyone interested in exploring the Calligraphy space through this workshop.
