Whose Goa Is It? Attend This Film Screening Mapping The Evolution Of Goan Identity & Culture

Samyukhtha Sunil

There are several quintessential sensorial cues that remind us of the ideal Goan experience. From the texture of beach sands to the delectable aroma of fried fish and authentic Konkani cuisine, the ultimate Goan experience is slow, meditative and is meant to be relished. Over the years, the traditional Goan way of living has been overshadowed by commercial establishments and other initiatives that shifted the emphasis of its offering into a ‘party capital’. This has altered and in many ways sidelined the essence of its local community and its culture.

In an attempt to revive the evolving Goan identity and map its future, Lost The Plot, a film curation collective collaborates with local filmmakers from the state to put together a cinematic experience that is meant to evoke a larger conversation on Goan identity.

‘Whose Goa Is It?’ is an evening of cinema and conversation that is set to screen the works of two culture enthusiasts and local filmmakers and storytellers from the state whose narratives have etched out an important question on the future of the authentic Goan identity.

The Golden Fish by Avadhoot Potdar, Akanksha Gupta and Akshata Devi delves into the murky world of Goa’s casino industry and how it has altered and impacted the local economy and culture. The second film, Bread & Belonging by Sonia Filinito unpacks the dynamic between food, culture and people through the lens of Goa’s beloved bread, the pao.

Both the film screenings will be followed by a short Q&A session and a conversation with the makers themselves. The event is set to take place on the 26th of June from 8 pm at Anjuna’s ‘Flying Goat Cafe’.
