The EyeMyth Festival Explores The Future Of New Media Through Their Experimental Works of Art

The one and only media arts festival in India, the EyeMyth festival, started as a celebration of visual music at the UnBox Festival in Delhi, showcasing global works of experimental films and animation in 2011. It has since then expanded into a dynamic media arts festival with a unique juxtaposition of Indian and global artists as well as progressive media. In the past the festival has showcased new media exhibitions, immersive media showcases, audiovisual performances, as well as workshops and networking events. These have incorporated diversity in its approaches and techniques from both established and emerging artists all around the world.

The past editions of this festival has witnessed collaborations with renowned festival platforms and institutions such as Japan Media Arts Festival, Red Bull Music Academy, and Gizmodo India. These platforms have constantly brought fresh insights into the world of technology and art. It has also collaborated with British Council, the Goethe Institut and Indian School of Design and Innovation through its previous editions. At present, it is the only media arts festival in India, unique in its intersection of global art, culture and technology. EyeMyth has also brought together performers, explorers and experts at the forefront of their creative technological fields. Mumbai is now the home for EyeMyth given the media and entertainment industry that thrives around it.

This year it is back in Mumbai again with its 5th edition between November 29 to December 1, 2019. It is a playground for the next generation of creators, bringing alive their exciting forays into the future of immersive storytelling and new media expressions. It is a 3-day festival which is designed to engage attendees in panels, conferences, new media showcases, and after parties. A 2-day visual conference would be held on the future of storytelling in India and beyond, featuring more than 50 inspirational local and international speakers sharing their approaches and techniques for crafting the future of creative tech and new expressions. Some of the speakers in this conference include Joelle Tobler - Black Spoon Games (indie games), James Boyce - Grumpy Sailor (immersive experiences), Mikaela Jade - Indigital (augmented reality & digital heritage), Betty Sargeant - PluginHUMAN (digital art experiences) and Varun Ramanna (transmedia art).

The platform features works by artists who are stretching the frontiers of New Media expressions. Some of the works include The Fantastic Indie Game Arcade, an award-winning indie video game from Switzerland and India; Mechbelief, a concept artist’s interpretation of alternate Indian histories through science fiction; VR Kino, a cutting-edge virtual reality from around the world and the Visual Music Showcase, radical short films and animations that visualise global music.

The EyeMyth after parties explore varied themes through new artist collaborations. These include the Future Music Visions, Desi New Media, and Speculative Sunday After Hours.

The next day of the festival named “Speculative Sunday” is a day devoted to hands-on workshops that visualise radical culture futures for India while learning new skills in speculative design and design fiction. It features a futuristic brunch - “Bhavishya Bhojanalaya”- curated by India’s leading food provocateur and chef, Gresham Fernandes in collaboration with “The Good Slice” and served with lo-fi music curated by indie label, Skip-A-Beat. The evening would come to an end with a series of “Audiovisual Performances by Future Fiction ft. Plan-B.” - effectively blending the workshop performances, and afterparty into one giant seamless celebration owned by everyone.

The event is supported by British Council, Pro Helvetia Swiss Arts Council and the Australia-India Council of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
