Merkabah Boards

Merkabah Boards is a Kochi-based premium skateboard brand that’s creating a one-of-a-kind artist-oriented collection of physical skateboards and digital NFTs. ‘Mer’ refers to Light, ‘Ka’ means Spirit and ‘Ba’ stands for the Body; Mer-Ka-Ba is the spirit surrounded by counter-rotating fields of light. Since there weren’t a lot of manufacturers making skateboards exclusively in India, the founder Francis Kurien Elenjikka, an artist himself, learned the carpentry behind the boards. The brand kicked off in 2019 with hand-drawn 3-D engraved decks produced in collaboration with local artists. The boards come in a range of hand-painted, hydro-dipped, stickered, and heat-pressed boards in funky caricatures taken from their Indian roots.

Piso Skateboards

In 2013, Varun Patra along with Nick Smith, ALIS and Abhishek Khan organised the Third Eye Tour, a first-of-its-kind skate tour from Bangalore to Goa that brought together skateboarders from across India. Inspired by this, in 2015, Vaibhav Rasam started experimenting with DIY boards and by 2018 Piso Skateboards had become a reality. A homegrown skateboard brand from Goa, they proudly claim themselves to be ‘By Skaters, For Skaters.’ Offering skateboards, decks and accessories, the brand wishes to create a happy skateboarding community and provide the best quality skateboard products that are budget-friendly as well. About the name, they say, “Every time we’re skateboarding, we draw a lot of attention from people passing by. Some are intrigued, but most people just cannot wrap their heads around it. They think we’re crazy when they see us fall or whizz past them. In the Goan local language (Konkani), the word ‘piso’ literally translates to ‘crazy’. We thought this was perfect!”
