India Falls From ‘Free’ To ‘Partly Free’ In Global Politics & Liberty Report

Over the past few years in India, especially recently, things have taken a polarised turn –– opinions have seen an all-time extreme, with no respite from the kind of injustices the country is witness to on a regular basis.

A global politics and liberties report by Freedom House, Freedom In The World 2021, states that India’s status as a ‘free’ country is now ‘partly free’. The report, while explaining the democracy decline in India, said, “Rather than serving as a champion of democratic practice and a counterweight to authoritarian influence from countries such as China, [the ruling] party is tragically driving India itself toward authoritarianism.”

This does not come as a shock –– the change in our freedom status seemed inevitable with the kind of policies being ruled out, as well as the response of the government to the citizens’ thoughts on them. The lack of freedom across various aspects and the decrease in the liberty of only certain sections of society have led us to a ‘partly free’ status.

We now live in a time where democracy, at times, is namesake –– the report simply cements that thought.
