While the West may stand divided on the urgency, impact, and credibility behind climate change (going as far as pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement), climate change is real and its global impacts are more visible than ever. India stands among the most vulnerable countries to be impacted by the repercussions of climate change.
About 71% of Indians believe that humans impact climate change according to a YouGov survey in 2019. Understanding the impact India plays and what it could mean for the country if they continue with their regular emissions, India entered the Paris Climate Agreement. It calls for all nations to keep their emissions within the compatibility range of 2°C. While the new agreement calls for 1.5 °C compatibility, India has not been able to reach that target as of now. Also no other country in the world has been able to align their renewable energy targets to match the 1.5 degrees warming targets.
“India is the only G20 country which is on a track consistent to move the world to a 2-degree Celsius warming future, though not a 1.5-degree warming future,” TERI Director General told TOI. The top three countries in terms of global emissions– China, USA and EU continue to be critically insufficient in reaching their goals. The report was released by several think-tanks keeping in mind the Paris Climate Agreement 2015.
