The Strangers’ Choir is a pop-up choral workshop that transforms a room full of strangers into a community through song. With no auditions or experience required, the initiative creates a welcoming space for people of all ages to connect, collaborate, and experience the collective joy of singing together.
I grew up singing in my school choir, and while I wouldn't call myself an exemplary singer, I could always carry a tune. Spending nearly ten years as part of that choir shaped me in ways that extended far beyond music. It gave me a confidence that seeped into every aspect of how I carried myself. There is something uniquely empowering about learning to trust your own voice while also understanding how it fits into a larger collective.
More than anything, choir gave me an instant sense of community. Some of my closest friendships were formed those tedious bus rides to performances, and the nervous excitement that comes before stepping onto a stage. It was a space where people came together with a shared purpose, united by the simple act of making music.
The Strangers’ Choir offers a chance for complete strangers to come together, sing, and leave as part of a collective experience built around music, collaboration, and joy.
Designed as a pop-up choral workshop, The Strangers’ Choir is not bothered with technical perfection and rather focused on the simple act of singing together. Participants do not need prior musical training, performance experience, or even confidence in their singing abilities. There are no auditions or skill requirements, and no pressure to sound a certain way. Instead, the workshop is built around the belief that anyone who enjoys singing deserves a place in the room, democratising learning and the joy of music.
Over the course of approximately three hours, attendees are guided through a series of exercises and rehearsals that gradually transform a group of unfamiliar faces into a functioning choir. By the end of the session, participants are not only singing together but also experiencing the unique sense of connection that emerges when individual voices become part of a larger whole.
Open to anyone aged seven and above, the workshop welcomes participants across generations, creating a rare space where everyone can share an artistic experience on equal footing. Every participant contributes to the choir, regardless of age or musical background, reinforcing the idea that collective participation matters more than individual expertise.
With upcoming editions taking place in Bengaluru and Mumbai this July, The Strangers’ Choir gives you an opportunity to show up as a stranger, and discover what can happen when a group of people chooses to sing together.
