The latest collection of Rihanna’s luxury fashion label Fenty dropped on June 19, making a mark on the global fashion platform. The campaign is a testament to Rihanna’s talent in donning many hats, including that of a photographer. But for those of South Asian descent, it is matter of pride and representation that one of the faces of the collection is the Indian model Naomi Janumala.

Naomi Janumala is a 19 year old model of Telangana origin who grew up in Mumbai and was scouted at the age of 16 through her Instagram. Janumala hails from a family of talents as her father is the playback singer Jimmy Moses and her uncle is the renowned comedian Johnny Lever. After being scouted in 2016, she was featured in many of the leading Indian fashion magazines and has worked with brands such as H&M, Adidas and Levis for their international campaigns. She is represented by Anima Creatives in Mumbai and has also signed with Elite Model Management in NYC and has also graced the catwalks of New York Fashion Week.

The 6-19 collection of Fenty is inspired by Rihanna’s immigrant experience from Barbados and features ‘a new facet of a woman and her wardrobe, exploring items intended for escape, intentionally made for ease of travel and rendered in light textiles with bright hues and eye catching prints.’ Inclusivity has always been an important part of Rihanna’s brand, as her beauty line was one of the first to feature over 50 shades of foundations to suit different skin tones and now this latest collection features mannequins that look like real women. In a short period, Fenty has created what many likes to call the “Fenty Effect” – competing brands scrambling to be more inclusive in light of the success of Fenty.

Inclusion of Naomi Janumala in the collection is a way of opening up more doors for those of South Asian descent and showing an accurate depiction of Indian beauty on a global level. As a brown girl who has made it her goal to change India’s skin tone beauty stereotypes and wishes that all Indian of all colours are perceived as beautiful just as they are, she is a perfect fit to be part of this campaign and a great representative for brown people everywhere.
