Women of Goem is a Goa-based initiative that works with women-led Self-Help Groups to preserve and promote the state's rich culinary heritage. By producing traditional spice blends rooted in family recipes, the project highlights the diversity of Goan food cultures while creating economic opportunities for women.
Goa as a society has always been run by women. It is fuelled by these businesswomen who command their fishing communities, hospitality joints and homes as a whole. But these women who keep the machine of one of the most vibrant and eccentric culinary traditions of our country alive, are rarely given their flowers. Women of Goem seeks to change that narrative by placing Goan women and their knowledge at the centre of the state's food story.
Founded around the idea of celebrating authentic Goan home cooking, Women of Goem works with women-led Self-Help Groups representing Hindu, Christian, Muslim, and tribal communities across the state. The initiative produces curated masala blends based on recipes that have been handed down within families for generations, taking these long standing repositories of culinary knowledge into a source of economic opportunity for these women.
For many visitors, the state's food culture is reduced to a handful of familiar dishes such as vindaloo or sorpotel. Women of Goem instead highlights the diversity of everyday Goan cooking, drawing from village traditions and community-specific recipes that are often overlooked in mainstream representations of the state's culinary identity.
Goa's cuisine reflects the influences of indigenous communities such as the Kunbi and Gavli tribes, Saraswat Brahmins, Muslim rulers, Portuguese settlers, and countless local adaptations that evolved over centuries. By preserving and sharing these recipes through its spice blends, Women of Goem honours and acknowledge's the state's multicultural heritage.
By sourcing ingredients locally and enabling women to participate in production and sales, the venture creates avenues for financial self-reliance while ensuring that traditional knowledge remains valued in contemporary markets. It doesn't attempt to dilute or make any aspect of the recipes and stories palatable and ensures that the food speaks for itself through the stories of these women that are important stakeholders in their community but have long been sidelined in mainstream understanding of the state's cultural ecosystem.
The initiative is safeguarding the culinary stories and traditions of these communities while also sustaining livelihoods, and ensuring that the women who have long been custodians of Goa's culinary traditions finally receive the recognition they deserve.
