The best way to motivate humans to follow rules, despite what our Brown families might say, is not punishment but incentive. In our country, until there's a traffic cop present, traffic lights are less a rule and more of a suggestion. To change this nonchalant attitude on road safety and encourage responsible driving habits in India, a new app has been introduced by a start-up called Traffic Rewards. Their pilot project incentivizes good traffic behaviour by rewarding users with points that can be redeemed for various goods and services.

Traffic Rewards operates on a simple yet effective concept — individuals are rewarded for adhering to traffic rules and signals. The app utilizes a tag or a radio frequency identification (RFID) device that is provided to users upon registration that you can attach to your two-wheeler or four-wheeler, enabling the app to track your movements. You can earn ten reward points for each instance of compliance at a traffic light. These points accumulate over time and can be redeemed for a range of benefits, including discounts on food, clothing, movie tickets, and other services. The app has 100+ brands that you can use your rewards for.

The project is developed by Social-Impact Innovations, a Nagpur-based start-up and is funded and implemented by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways and Nagpur Municipal Corporation. It was on display at the 108th Indian Science Congress exhibition. The devices have already been installed at the signals and the company has vigorously tested them. Traffic Rewards has tied up with major brands like KFC, Pizza Hut, PVR, Cinepolis, Radisson Blu, Pharmeasy, Ajio, Croma, BoAT, and many more.

We often see cases of road rage and blame roulette on the roads as Indians in our chaotic traffic patterns. But we also love our discounts. Traffic Rewards combines the two through an optimistic and pioneering initiative to induce a positive behavioural change in drivers paving the way for better road etiquette where traffic rules are respected, accidents are minimized, and road safety becomes a collective priority, all while getting a good 10% to 20% off on our capitalistic pleasures.
