Originating from the Bay of Bengal, severe cyclonic storm Remal crossed the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal between Sagar Island and Khepupara late on Sunday night, bringing strong winds and heavy rain to the region, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported. Wind speeds reached 110-120 kilometers per hour, blowing at up to 135 kmph, at the time of landfall. From today morning onwards, the storm weakened as it moved northeastwards.

Millions were left without power as strong winds toppled electricity poles and damaged transformers across the affected areas. Several trees fell causing road blockages. The incessant rainfall has also caused major water-logging. Authorities on both sides of the border are still assessing the full extent of the damage, but early reports indicate roofs blown off homes and mud houses flattened. Precautionary measures saw over 110,000 people evacuated to shelters before the storm made landfall. As per the sources of the Deccan Herald, there are 10 reported deaths in Bangladesh and 6 in West Bengal.

The Indian Navy deployed ships, aircraft, divers, and medical supplies in anticipation of potential rescue and relief operations. Flight disruptions were significant, with over 50 domestic and international flights canceled at Kolkata's flooded airport. The storm surge also caused significant damage to river beach areas like Digha and the embankments in the Sundarbans mangrove forest, with high tides breaching protective barriers in several locations.
