Kalimpong Band Gauley Bhai's Transtraditional Sound Is Redefining Homegrown Indie Rock

Vaaswat Sarkar

It’s been a while since I came across an Indian band with such a fresh and unique musical repertoire. In the diverse Indian culturescape of contemporary music, Gauley Bhai defies categorization and captivates listeners with what the band terms a “transtraditional rock sound”. The four-piece outfit hails from Bangalore and and has been making waves in the music scene with their enthralling melodies. With their unique blend of rock, contemporary ethnic, and regional roots music, Gauley Bhai takes listeners on a sonic journey that reflects their personal experiences of migration and cultural exploration.

Gauley Bhai's music embodies the power of fusion, as they seamlessly weave together diverse musical influences from their respective backgrounds. Three band members grew up in Kalimpong, a town in the Gorkhaland region of northeast India, where Nepali is the predominant language. Gauley Bhai, in Nepali, means the younger brother from the village back home. The band draws inspiration from the sounds of their childhood as Kalimpong’s rich cultural heritage infuses with their music, creating a tapestry of melodies that resonate with listeners emotionally.

The band members, Veecheet Dhakal on violin and vocals, Siddhant Mani Chettri on guitar, Anudwatt Dhakal on bass, and Joe Panicker on drums, bring their individual talents and musical sensibilities to the table. Their collective synergy is evident in the way they effortlessly blend their instruments and voices, creating a harmonious fusion that transcends boundaries.

Gauley Bhai describes their music as having the spirit of a jam band, where creativity flows freely and boundaries are shattered. Their songs are not confined to a specific genre or style but rather embrace a genre-fluid approach that keeps listeners on their toes. Their harmonious fusion of global sounds draws inspiration from diverse musical traditions ranging from the soul-stirring melodies of Nepali folk legends like Jhalakman Gandharva and Bir Bahadur Biswakarma to the infectious rhythms of South-Indian Singari traditions. They also seamlessly incorporate elements from Malian folk artists such as Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba and Tuareg rock pioneers like Tamikrest and Mdou Moctar, while paying homage to Western guitarists like Marc Ribot and R.L Burnside, as well as great classics spanning rock, blues, and hip-hop from the US.

One cannot discuss Gauley Bhai without mentioning their critically acclaimed album — Joro. Released less than two years after the band's formation, Joro showcases their raw talent and boundless creativity. The album takes listeners on a thematic exploration of love, identity, and memory, with each track offering a unique sonic experience. From the energetic and danceable folk-rock tunes like Nepali Ko Rela to the introspective and serene melodies of Sanglanga Dooby, Joro is a testament to Gauley Bhai's ability to create a cohesive and engaging musical journey. The album's varying shades and textures elevate it from being a mere collection of songs to a captivating and immersive experience.

To truly understand the magic of Gauley Bhai, one must witness their electrifying live performances. The band's energy on stage is infectious, and their ability to connect with the audience is unparalleled. As they effortlessly blend their instruments and voices, the crowd becomes part of the music, moving and grooving to the irresistible rhythms. When you watch Gauley Bhai playing live, you spontaneously realize the immense power of music to transcend language barriers and cultural differences; creating a sense of unity and togetherness among listeners.
