Most designers are on a constant journey of exploring fashion as a medium of representation for a larger group. They seek to base their collections in culture, identity and ethos in order to speak to communities. This where young menswear designer Meghana Kiran is carving out a unique niche by using fashion for self exploration.
She finds an inclination towards design that comes naturally to oneself instead of creating for the purpose of obligation towards a community. Meghana believes that her designs tend to reflect her personal story which in itself is relatable to so many. Confident in her own distinctive journey, the self-taught knitwear designer has managed to speak to different subsections.
Her unique approach seeks to reimagine menswear by questioning conventional design narratives. In addition, by subverting a traditional approach Meghana is creating a rare motif of deconstructed knitwear. This original spin offers vivid designs, palettes and patterns that are hard to find in the menswear market. Furthermore, it embraces the beauty in chaos with unfinished edges and intentional loose ends.
The artist plays around with knitwear to navigate human conditions such as existential crises and more by utilising yarns as a mode of therapy. What initially started as a coping mechanism has transformed into a medium of discovery while providing the creative with comfort. As the intricate work requires immense concentration, by producing works of art with knitting Meghana tends to achieve a sense of liberation.
Fashion is constantly evolving and currently it is altering its existing exploitative workings. That both hinders the environment as well as destroys individual taste in a pool of mass produced clothing. Hence it is important that creatives like Meghana dismantle the existing system with unconventional thinking and designs rooted in ethical consumption.
