After spending years honing his craft in studios and refining the sonic projects of numerous artists in the Indian music industry for nearly a decade while serving as both a producer and mixing/mastering engineer, Pritpal Sudan AKA sudan has finally stepped into the spotlight with a deeply personal, 13-track eponymous debut album.
'sudan?', which was entirely self-written, recorded, produced, mixed, and mastered by the man himself, is a vibrant tapestry of textures, sounds, voices, and styles. It captures a range of emotions, from angst and joy to loneliness, detachment, and resilience. sudan's work is a blend of dynamic and meditative soundscapes, full of life and heartbreak. His ability to convey such a broad spectrum of emotions while maintaining a cohesive sound makes this album his most intricate and personal project to date.
The album straddles the organic electronic space, creating a unique and innovative sound that merges the precision and detail of electronic music with the warmth and texture of live performance. This pop-leaning approach results in a rich auditory experience that is both familiar and refreshingly new. sudan cites influences like EDEN, Jon Bellion, Tennyson, and Tom Misch, all of whom are contemporary shapeshifters whose impact is evident in the album's versatile and finely balanced compositions.
From the opening track, 'intro', where sudan's spoken word cascades over piano keys, to the closing track 'iiiii', a texture-heavy yet pared-back production, the album showcases sudan's ability to mould and bend his vocals to suit each song. The soundscape is marked by prominent synthesizers, a hybrid of electronic drums with organic textures and percussions, and uniquely processed vocals that could very well become sudan's signature style.
sudan? also features four notable collaborations with LAVI on 'trouble', Vavae on 'untitled', BENDI on 'dreaming', and L'nee Golay on 'aftermath'. The album credits Pruthvi Dhawale as a songwriter on 'can you?', Rohit Kumar with additional production on aftermath, and Nathan Thampy on keys with Sanket Pahurkar on drums for the outro track iiiii. These collaborations, while seamlessly integrated into the album, highlight sudan's vision as a solo artist. As a producer, he's proven himself adept at catering to the vision of others, but with this album, he finds a middle ground between his sound and those of his collaborators.
Two singles from the album, 'omg' and 'trouble' featuring LAVI, have already been released, with the latter's garage-inspired production already proving to be an earworm. These singles offer a glimpse into the innovative and heartfelt sound that defines sudan?, promising an album that is as emotionally resonant as it is sonically adventurous. As Sudan steps into the limelight, his debut album cements his legacy as a true creative when it comes to electronic music.
