Jaipur Attend An Immersive Exhibition Intersecting Historical Legacy & Contemporary Art

Gulbahaar Kaur

An ongoing exhibition seeks to reimagine structural spaces by creating a dialogue between the old heritage of a historical site and contemporary art pieces that reflect present-day sensibilities. The unique showcase will bring the interiors to the exterior by featuring site-specific art at the Sculpture Park in Madhavendra Palace, Nahargarh Fort, Jaipur; recreating the interiors of a middle class Indian home through modern installations using everyday materials and items like nylon folding cots, clay-painted pots, curtains and other mundane objects. These will be incorporated into the architecture and merged with doors, windows, and metal armatures.

The year-long exhibit is curated by artist and curator Peter Nagy. It features many contemporary artists from Italy, Portugal, France, Germany, Brazil, Switzerland, and India. The event has been organised by the Saat Saath Arts Foundation, in collaboration with the Government of Rajasthan. The project has been in the works for a long time however suffered from multiple delays and hurdles due to the Covid-19 lockdowns, finally in 2023 the group managed to bring the sculptures to life.

The on-sight work is created using locally sourced material and seeks to adapt to the natural contours of the Indian architecture. Also taking in and understanding the cultural context of Jaipur. Some of the artists are also playing off the elaborate decorated spaces of the palaces and setting their art pieces around them instead of limiting them to boxes of museums and galleries.

The exhibit will be open till December 2023 and will provide an immersive space where the audience can interact with the sculptures as well.
