Maya Pistola Agavepura burst into the Indian alcobev scene not quite long ago with its immensely popular first variant, the Reposado, in the year 2022 and has seen exponential growth ever since its inception. What I find particularly interesting is how the brand’s identity draws inspiration from a popular myth central to the Tequila and Mezcal worlds. The legend goes that once upon a time, the Aztec Goddess Mayahuel transformed into an Agave Plant to hide from her evil grandmother. Though she was discovered and cut to pieces, her lover, the Wind God, scattered the leaves from her body across the world’s richest soils. Maya Pistola Agavepura re-imagined this story to interpret how agave came to India’s Deccan Plateau. Today, she is reborn in the red-black volcanic soil of the Deccan plateau, on which grows the Wild Americana agave plants, which the brand sources to make its various beverages. The brand name, Maya Pistola Agavepura, is thus inspired by its mascot, Goddess Mayahuel. The question has been asked – Why Pistola? The pistol was, in fact, created not as a weapon of harm, but as a tool of justice and democracy. A pistol encourages authenticity and ushers in truth. This is a testament to the fact that all the beverages made by the brand are devoid of any adulteration and are one hundred percent pure.

Now what makes their latest additions so unique? Añejo is aged for over 14 months in Virgin American White Oak. This deep gold-brown spirit has an oaky nose of cocoa, and dried figs with a subtle smoky background. Smooth and rich like a Christmas pudding, this expression is best enjoyed neat or with a splash of water. Extra Añejo is currently the cherry on the top when it comes to their diverse range of offerings. For over 36 months, this beautifully rested spirit has also matured in Virgin American White Oak and then finished in Ex-Bourbon barrels for a complex, long and decadent mouthfeel. Similar to a Cognac, this is meant to be had neat or with a dash of water.

“Both the Añejo and Extra Añejo variants are rich, bold and complex spirits, with their own unique characteristics and nuances. The Añejo is reminiscent of a Christmas cake packed with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices and cherished for the joy that it brings to special occasions. The Extra Añejo invokes the warmth and comfort of loved ones gathering around a fireplace. These luxurious spirits offer an alternative to India’s consummate whisky aficionados."
