Mumbai continues to face intense monsoon rainfall, with widespread waterlogging, transport disruptions and red alerts issued across the region. As authorities urge residents to stay indoors, this resource guide compiles essential emergency contacts, including state and national disaster management helplines, flood control room numbers, railway assistance contacts and animal rescue services.
Mumbai has spent the past few days under a relentless curtain of rain. Intense showers have lashed the financial capital, leading to widespread water logging, traffic snarls, disrupted train services and flight delays.
The India Meteorological Department has issued orange alerts for Mumbai and surrounding districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds and high tides. In just the first few days of July, the city has already received nearly 80 percent of its average monthly rainfall, an extraordinary figure that underscores the intensity of this year's monsoon.
In several low-lying areas, roads have disappeared beneath floodwaters, while rescue teams and civic authorities remain on high alert. Railway lines have also been disrupted due to landslides occurring in the Western Ghats affecting the Karjat to Lonavla Bhor section, causing cancellations and diversion of trains running through that chunk. Tragically, the rains have also claimed lives, with incidents of building and scaffolding collapses and rain-related accidents reported across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The state government has urged citizens to remain indoors as much as possible. Schools and universities will remain closed, and private institutions have been advised to allow employees to work from home. Dogs, cats, and other street animals are among the most vulnerable during periods of intense rainfall, often struggling to find shelter from flooded streets. For citizens even small acts of kindness can make a significant difference, placing bowls of clean water and food in sheltered areas, allowing animals to take cover in building compounds or parking areas.
