4 Contemporary Indian Labels Redefining Artisanal Jackets

While the coat silhouette has been around since the 1800s, the first interpretation of a jacket variation was credited to the British who sorted out an early design as a uniform for naval officers.

However, the Indian interpretation of the jacket boasts of a distinguished history of its own that seems to trace down to the pre-independence era. From hip-length tailored coats to mandarin collars and embroidered khadi versions, jackets have always been considered a distinguished attire in every man’s wardrobe.

Today, there is a mélange of Indian labels and designers tapping into innovative sartorial sensibilities to merge indigenous craft-based techniques, textile fabrics and repurposed scraps to create an artisanal version of the jacket.

III. Oushk Ensemble

The Sanctuary Jacket is a single piece of art which embodies earthly elements of all the three realms that are; sky, land and water. Oushk reimagines these elements that take a fine balance of wild and nature and amalgamates them with heavily detailed pieces to create magnificently embroidered garments. Be it the intricately threaded water bodies or the clustered forms of clouds and stones or the varying shades of greens for the vegetation, every bit of this jacket carries and represents the ornate beauty of an ‘art meets fashion’ aesthetic.

Johargram

IV. Johargram

Johargram, in its literal sense, is the combination of ‘namaste’ (johar) and ‘village’ (gram) — welcoming the craft and textiles of Jharkhand with the utmost respect. Sticking to a strong colour palette rooted in identity, the deep red, which by tradition stands for balidaan (sacrifice) and white which stands for shanti (peace), are in the spotlight to emphasize their roots in Jharkhand and also a homage to the Mehar weaver community in the label’s collections. This magical blend of Jharkhandi textile and tradition with mainstream streetwear is reflected in the label’s uber range of unisex bomber jackets that we swear by!
