“Let’s visit Goa.” This is perhaps the most heard sentence in the history of Indian friend circles. And I mean, for good reason. Goa’s beautiful beaches, legendary parties and adventure sports make it an ideal beach destination. However, over the last decade, it has become increasingly overhyped and commercialized. Today, I am going to share with you an exquisite gem of a place called Gokarna, a quaint temple town on the Karnataka coastline, quite close to Goa but often overlooked owing to its popular neighbor. While Gokarna may not have Goa’s happening party scene, if you are looking for serene beaches, adventure treks, far away from the maddening crowds and also easy on-the-pocket, Gokarna is your ideal travel destination. It is becoming increasingly popular with the youth of today. We present to you a two-day travel guide to Gokarna:
Day 1: Beach Bliss and Temple Trails
Morning:
When traveling, start your day early. That’s always been my motto. At dawn, head straight to the famous Kudle Beach. As the sun rises, take a leisurely stroll along the golden sands, feel the gentle breeze on your face, and soak in the tranquil atmosphere. Treat yourself to a delicious breakfast at one of the beachside cafes, savoring the local flavors and enjoying the stunning view of the Arabian Sea. Try to wrap up breakfast quickly if you can, and visit the nearby Shiva cave, inside which a hidden gem awaits.
Afternoon
After awakening the cave explorer in you, make your way to Om Beach, known for its distinctive shape resembling the auspicious Hindu symbol 'Om.' Spend the afternoon exploring the beach and if you’re adventurous like me, try your hand at water sports like banana boat rides or jet skiing, or if you’re more laid-back like my brother during holidays, simply lounge under the shade of palm trees. Don't forget to capture the breathtaking views from the cliffside viewpoints.
Evening:
As the day winds down, visit the Mahabaleshwar Temple, one of the most respected Shiva temples in the region. It is also called the Gorkarna Temple and that’s where the town gets its name from. Immerse yourself in the spiritual ambiance, witness the evening aarti (prayer ceremony), and appreciate the temple’s intricate architecture. Take a walk through the narrow lanes of the old town, exploring local shops and savoring street food delicacies. Roaming around the town during the late evening is a good choice for two reasons — in the daytime, the heat can be overwhelming, so a walk is not a wise idea, especially during summer. Also during the evening, as you wander through the narrow lanes, tightly packed with houses, a delightful sight awaits. Adorning almost every house, you'll find a white rangoli, intricately drawn, accompanied by the warm glow of diyas(lamps). The diya-filled lanes add to the immersive charm of the town.
Day 2: Serene Nature and Sunset Delights
Morning:
Start day two with a visit to the calming Paradise Beach. It is accessible only by boat or a short trek through the forest. This secluded beach offers a slice of paradise away from the crowds. Enjoy the pristine beauty, take a dip in the crystal-clear waters, and bask in the serenity of the surroundings.
Afternoon:
Next, embark on a scenic trek to Half Moon Beach. The trail takes you through lush greenery, rocky cliffs, and offers breathtaking views of the coastline. Once you reach the beach, unwind in the hammocks, indulge in a beachside picnic, or simply soak in the sun.
Evening:
End your Gokarna adventure with a breathtaking sunset at the iconic Om Beach. You must have seen countless sunsets by now but each one is different, depending on how the nature around you presents it. Find a cozy spot on the shore, and watch the sun dipping below the horizon, and painting the sky in vibrant hues. Witness the magical moment when the sun's last rays illuminate the waters, creating a visual frame straight out of a Monet painting. Afterward, treat yourself to a sumptuous seafood dinner at one of the beachside shacks because what could be a better ending than gorging on some delicious local cuisine?
With its pristine beaches, spiritual aura, and natural beauty, Gokarna offers a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration. This two-day itinerary will allow you to experience the best of what this coastal paradise has to offer. So pack your bags, embrace the serenity, and get ready for an unforgettable journey in Gokarna.
