I am a whisky man. Like Hozier, I take my whisky neat, and my coffee black. When I first tasted Nao Spirits' Hapusa Himalayan Gin at a pop-up dinner at the Glenburn Penthouse in 2023, however, I was quickly converted to the cult of Indian craft gins. The classic Gin & Tonic and fresh orange juice with a shot of Hapusa have been my go-to summer drinks since then. This year, the Goa-based makers of Greater Than and Hapusa are back with a new expression of their limited edition Juniper Bomb craft gin from 2020.
Juniper Bomb’s origins are as unique as its taste. This limited-edition craft gin was first created by accident during a blackout at Nao Spirits' distillery in Goa in 2017. Soon after their signature Greater Than dry gin was launched, the distillery was hit by a power outage. Distillation stopped, and it was 24 hours before they could start the process again. This meant that the Juniper berries and other botanicals steeped into the undistilled spirit three times longer than needed. The resulting gin was not Greater Than. It was something else. They called it: the Juniper Bomb.
Despite, or because of, its accidental origins, the limited-edition Juniper Bomb was a runaway hit with Indian gin enthusiasts. The long steeping time gives the gin its intense body which tastes and feels like biting into a plump Juniper berry. Bold and complex at first with a finish of ripe lychees, every sip of this gin explodes in your mouth. It's best had naked, without any garnish, to allow its powerful, unapologetic juniper notes to take centre stage.
Juniper Bomb is now available in Maharashtra (Mumbai/Pune) and Goa.
