Akhil Abbas's Latest Single 'Nila' Is A Queer Exploration Of Love, Angst, And Separation

Vaaswat Sarkar

The independent music scene in India grows versatile and dynamic with each passing day. In today’s day and age, it is not only the song but also the accompanying music video that makes a song a complete audio-visual package for the audience to enjoy. In that regard, Akhil Abbas’s second pop single, Nila certainly fits the bill. Alongside Abbas, the Malayalam duet features the voice of Hansha Ramshif and has been produced by V3k.

Nila is a love song that captures the angst and longing that follows a separation. While love and the affairs of the heart are central to the song, it is layered with metaphors that draw parallels between physical intimacy and transcendental forms of love. All credit for that goes to the lyrics written by Dinnath Puthanchery and the way Abbas’s composition complements it while retaining the artist's own musical nuances.

The music video has been produced by Unfoundead Films and was directed by Sachin Das with Harini and Greeshma as the leading cast. The music video has conventional male and female vocals but what is interesting is how the music video accompanies the song portraying a queer couple in love. Love appears to us in different forms and degrees and the music video tries to sensibly capture the wide spectrum of emotions that connectlove — from the pangs of angst to that whirlwind feeling of euphoria. A significant part of the music video’s narrative, such as its premise and setting, is intentionally left obscure to stimulate the imagination of its viewers.
