Creativo Studio’s Miniature Sets Are Expanding The Scope Of Visual Storytelling

Disha Bijolia

The expansion of storytelling and worldbuilding in films has increased the need and creative use of miniature sets. Films like Interstellar and Inception serve as prime examples of how miniatures can be employed to transport audiences to awe-inspiring and visually captivating realms. Whether it was a journey through the cosmos or gravity-defying cityscapes, these intricate sets allowed for the seamless blending of reality and dreams, enhancing the film's narrative depth. The use of miniatures in these films not only expanded the scope of storytelling but also brought a tangible and tactile quality to the intricate worlds immersing audiences in a visually rich experience.

Here at home, a Mumbai-based studio is doing the same. Creativo Studio has carved a niche for themselves in the set design and stop motion industry, but their expertise in miniature art truly sets them apart. Founded in 2020 by Sarvesh, Dheeraj, Yogesh, Suraj, Rupesh, Rohit, and Amit, who graduated from the prestigious Sir J J Institute of Applied Arts in 2019, The Studio quickly gained recognition for their exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail. Though they started by undertaking freelance projects, their unparalleled talent soon caught the attention of commercial clients, museums, movies, exhibitions, and more.

One of their notable achievements includes their involvement in the creation of a short film titled Gulabi Bindu which though not intended for commercial purposes, was a significant milestone for the studio. More recently, Creativo Studio took on the challenge of producing a stop-motion commercial for Fastrack conceptualizing characters and structures and envisioning their movements, textures, and colors. Metromorphosis, a miniature by the studio was also installed at the Urban Art Festival at Sasson Docks in Mumbai. Additionally, they have worked on ads for Phone pay, Zomato, Flipkart, Airtel as well as Dahan, a horror series and the new film Bhola.

While miniature art has long been associated with museums, Creativo Studio has taken this traditional form to new heights significantly contributing to the museum landscape, including their remarkable creation of a 12-foot realistic replica of the Titanic, now on display in Bangalore. Currently, they are hard at work on their upcoming project, a 6 by 6-foot miniature hockey stadium, destined to captivate audiences with its intricate design.

The art of miniature set building and set design is often an overlooked but crucial component of the film ecosystem. While audiences marvel at the grandeur of sweeping landscapes and elaborate sets, it is easy to forget the countless hours and meticulous craftsmanship invested in creating these miniaturized worlds. Creativo Studio is one among the very few that dedicate their expertise to crafting intricate sets that enhance our cinematic experience.
