Watch Homegrown Musician Sid Sriram Perform At NPR's Iconic Tiny Desk

Disha Bijolia

Indian-American singer Sid Sriram has taken the music world by storm with his soulful voice. Sid was born in Chennai but soon moved to California where he trained in Carnatic music from a young age with his music and voice nurtured by his mother. After graduating in music production and engineering from Berklee, the artist started his career with the track Adiye for the soundtrack of the Tamil drama Kadal (2013) composed by his idol A. R. Rahman.

Sid has worked on a lot of projects as a playback singer across languages following his first album Entropy in 2019. The singer recently announced his tour for the second album Siddharth alongside Bon Iver. Performing a new R&B-informed single from the album, Do The Dance, created with Bon Iver's Justin Vernon and Gayngs’ Ryan Olson, Sid made an appearance at NPR's Tiny Desk Concert last week.

Tiny Desk Concert is a popular video series of live concerts hosted by NPR Music at the desk of All Songs Considered host Bob Boilen in Washington, D.C. It came about in 2008 when folk singer Laura Gibson performed at Boilen's desk and was named after his 1970s psychedelic dance band called Tiny Desk Unit. Over the years, it has developed a cult following with some of the best performances from Anderson .Paak, Tyler The Creator, Mac Miller, and my personal favourite, The Cranberries.

Celebrating AAPI Heritage Month, Sid Sriram is one of the first South ASian artists to perform at the concert. He took to Instagram talking about the making of his new single, “I still vividly remember my second day ever in Minneapolis, being in Ryan Olson’s studio with him, Chris Bierden, Justin Vernon and Aaron Baum. As they landed on this chord progression, there was this magical, palpable joy pulsing through the room. The same joy flowed powerfully through every phase of creating this song. Making music with people you love is one of the truest joys in life. Lots more to come.”
