Malleswaram.org is a community-led digital archive dedicated to preserving the cultural, social, ecological and architectural heritage of Bengaluru's historic Malleswaram neighbourhood. Through oral histories, landmark documentation, tree mapping, heritage walks and public engagement initiatives, the platform captures the stories that have shaped one of the city's most iconic localities.

Malleswaram, located in the northwest part of Bengaluru remains one of the city’s most enduring cultural anchors. Some of Bengaluru's most iconic establishments from Veena Stores to Central Tiffin Room (CTR) are located in this area. From its tree-lined avenues, century-old institutions, bustling markets and deeply rooted community life have long made it more than just a neighbourhood.

Launched as a community-driven digital archive, Malleswaram.org is an ambitious attempt to document the cultural, social, ecological and architectural legacy of one of Bengaluru’s oldest neighbourhoods. The website emerged from a year-long effort involving archival research, oral history collection, mapping exercises, heritage walks and community engagement activities.

Planned more than 125 years ago in the aftermath of a plague outbreak that affected the old city, Malleswaram was conceived as a modern extension of Bengaluru, featuring a grid layout, wide roads and generous public spaces. Over the decades, it became home to civil servants, educators, musicians, writers and cultural institutions, earning a reputation as one of the city’s most distinctive cultural hubs. It’s one of those parts of the city that will instantly transport by the smell of fresh flowers being sold along the market or the buildings that has stood the test of the tumultuous time this city has had with development and planning.

Visitors on the website can explore interactive sections dedicated to landmarks, heritage buildings, Art Deco architecture, tree mapping and oral histories. The platform highlights everything from educational institutions and religious landmarks to lesser-known architectural treasures that often go unnoticed in everyday life. The inclusion of oral histories ensures that the memory of the locality that once existed won’t fade away with time.

The project is spearheaded by architect and community activist Suchitra Deep, founder of Malleswaram Social, and has been supported by the India Foundation for the Arts. A multidisciplinary team of architects, researchers, writers, illustrators and technologists contributed to the platform.

The organisation also hosts a range of events designed to uncover the stories and hidden secrets of Malleswaram for people of all ages, whether they are longtime Bengalureans or first-time visitors. From guided Art Deco walks through the neighbourhood to innovative Bingo Walks, where participants receive a bingo sheet that encourages them to observe familiar streets with fresh eyes, these experiences invite people to engage with Malleswaram in new and meaningful ways.

Through open calls for memories, photographs, illustrations and personal narratives, Malleswaram.org invites residents to become active custodians of their neighbourhood’s history. The archive remains intentionally unfinished, designed to grow as new stories emerge and more voices contribute. It is a reminder that cities are built as much from memories and relationships as they are from roads and buildings. As Bengaluru continues to transform at a rapid pace, the platform offers a model for how communities can preserve their identity and history.
